Overview

The TIRM Relationship Coaching Consultation is a trauma-informed and neurobiological approach for couples seeking deeper understanding, repair, and co-regulation. It integrates the Trauma Informed Relational Model (TIRM), a framework that draws from attachment research, polyvagal theory, object relations, interpersonal neurobiology, and conscious communication practices.

The Trauma Informed Relational Model (TIRM) is grounded in Dynamic Psychosocialsomatic Psychotherapy (DPP), a comprehensive trauma-informed framework developed at The Trauma Recovery Institute. DPP integrates systems biology, affect regulation theory, polyvagal science, and object relations to map how trauma manifests across cognition, emotion, and physiology. This foundation allows TIRM to translate deep psychophysiological insights into practical tools for relational repair, co-regulation, and conscious partnership.

“Neither a lofty degree of intelligence nor imagination nor both together go to the making of genius. Love, love, love, that is the soul of genius.”
— Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

10 Foundational Premises of TIRM

  • The romantic bond completes what is unresolved or unhealed in the parental bond — the relationship itself becomes the therapy.
  • Partners unconsciously reenact past dynamics to bring awareness and opportunity for repair.
  • Corrective emotional experiences are cultivated through shared vulnerability, love mapping, and continuous invitations.
  • Childhood trauma intensity influences the magnitude of relational conflict and reenactment.
  • Conflict and repair are essential psychological, metabolic, and neurological processes, fostering resilience and downregulating chronic autonomic stress.
  • Feelings are meaningful guides, even if they are not factual.
  • Co-regulation produces safety; dysregulated external management can erode relational trust.
  • Balancing masculine and feminine energies fosters relational harmony and individual purpose.
  • Compassionate curiosity is a muscle that strengthens relational attunement.
  • Use these principles to navigate, frame, and repair conflicts consciously.
Some of the biggest challenges in relationships come from the fact that most people enter a relationship in order to get something: they’re trying to find someone who’s going to make them feel good. In reality, the only way a relationship will last is if you see your relationship as a place that you go to give, and not a place that you go to take.

7 Principles for Conscious Relationship Co-Creation

  • The relationship exists in the space between partners — honor and protect this space.
  • Emotional reactions are the inner child attempting to communicate — listen, witness, and respond with empathy.
  • We are energetic beings; maintain awareness of relational energy to avoid toxicity.
  • Bewildering behavior is a protective cry from the child within — decode and respond compassionately.
  • Frustration and conflict are growth opportunities; gratitude for these moments fosters relational maturity.
  • Joy, play, and fun are essential ingredients for connection and repair. Direct passion intentionally into the relationship to strengthen intimacy.
  • Co-create a shared vision and compelling goals for the relationship — specificity focuses energy and strengthens mutual commitment.
“True love begins when nothing is looked for in return.”
— Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
